English day. I, among few others was pessimistic about this program. Not that I despise English speakers, it’s just that I didn’t think that people will actually commit to such a proposal. Teachers already tried those stuff ever since we were 14 and it never worked unless certain punishments were involved. Students, clever as they were, knew the benefits but still they won’t cooperate. Why? The answer was simple, it’s among other reasons is because the fear of being judged by others was by far, way superior to the will for improvement. Students are concerned of other’s acceptance and what people might say about them.
But few Mondays ago, I went to class and it was English day. With the same pessimistic thoughts I sat on the class bench when suddenly I heard a noise from the back, conversing in foreign tongue… it was English… Then the person to my right started to speak English, a broken one, he sounded silly but was still understandable. It was not so long that I started to realize almost everybody was speaking English.
These people seemed shameless ladies and gentlemen but guess what, that is exactly the attitude of excellence. They fear not of being judged by others. They realize what they were doing and what they were after. Shame in the other hand is the silent saboteur of success. Shame is something that you feel others felt towards you but in reality, they rarely do. Thus my friends, be smart, be shameless and grasp your confidence to speak in English. Do it together as you can write alone, read alone, but you can’t speak alone or you will be sent straight to the mental hospital.
Do it to boost your confidence, increase your fluency, open opportunities and be successful not only as a world class doctor but more importantly as a person. This is achieved by exiting your comfort zone and in this case is to not speak Malay but speak English on Monday. Make a grammar mistake and don’t be shy about it because others make mistakes too, they just didn’t know about it yet.
Thus, in a nutshell, let us together support English day. Speak English, use any slang you feel comfortable speaking with, be it American, Australian, British, Malay or even Arabic English is fine as long as we at least try. So friends, be bold and don’t let your success roll. Speak English and may your confidence be unleashed.
